Next Meeting

No date has been set as of yet for the next meeting, but it will be in the first couple of weeks in next semester.

For those that have been anxiously waiting for more activities, I apologise for the delay. However, with exams and assignments we decided to take a short break.

Thanks for your patience.

Preparation is under way for the Full Affiliation Meeting. It will need to be held early in the semester and will need to be well attended by paid up members. Upon Full Affiliation we will be able to use money allocated by the UQ Union to organise activities and events.

A Green and Gold Republic By 2001

OUR OWN HEAD OF STATE

A republic means having an Australian as Australia's Head of state.

Currently our Head of State is a foreign monarch who lives on the other side of the world and rarely visits Australia.

Who does our head of state represent when she travels - Australia or Great Britain?

When is she ever referred to elsewhere as the Queen of Australia?

Our Head of State should be chosen from one of us.

Currently the Queen is our head of state only because she was born into the right family, has no older or younger brothers and is a member of a particular religion.

Why is it that in our country with a great tradition of equality, national pride and democracy, only an unelected, foreigner from an elitist family can hold the highest position in the land?

THE POWERS OF THE PRESIDENT

The Australian Republican Movement believes that the Head of State should:

Be an Australian citizen eligible to vote.

Serve only for five years.

Have the same powers as the Governor-General.

Have those powers spelled out in the constitution.
